Re: How much can trainees afford in rent?

I managed living on my own in a studio flat in the centre of an expensive city on a band 4 salary, so definitely do-able on a band 6. It just depends what your other outgoings are and what quality of leisure you are used to. My standards have risen since then, but I'm still aiming to buy/rent somewh...

Re: Would really love some guidance, feedback and general comments

In terms of experience, you will need much more than that. Although the courses generally say a minimum of one year's experience, in practice most people have a lot more than this, often in multiple roles with different client groups and often involving direct experience of therapeutic work. You als...

Re: Birmingham 2018

Congratulations!!!! Here's the link - no idea why it's not searchable, I'll make you all admins so you can figure out what settings are wrong! I was thinking once the deadline passes, I'll email the course admin team and ask them to send it out to people who might not be on the forum as well. https:...

Great! Looks like FB wants me to invite someone else before I set it up, so if someone PMs me their email address, I'll add you to it.

Re: Birmingham 2018

Hello Maddy!
I am officially now a definite for Birmingham - various bureaucratic hoops being met first of course.
Shall we do the facebook group thing that the other uni courses seem to be setting up?

Re: Birmingham 2018

Hello! Congratulations for getting a place! I am technically waiting to hear the result of a reserve place offer - the decision is probably made for me, but I am not 100% sure which I would accept if I did have the choice - but I think Birmingham is the most likely place for me in September! I inter...

Re: Is it all made up?

Wow, what an interesting conversation starter! You talk about 'large gains' (not) being made... I think the reality of services, particularly the NHS, is that most therapy on offer is short-term. Whatever NICE guidelines suggest, services never seem to offer the full dose of treatment - or even offe...

Birmingham 2018

Hello! Any fellow 2018 Birmingham trainees out there? It would be great to get to know people a bit before the course starts, and to have someone to bounce ideas off as they start bombarding us with paperwork and placement choices for the first year.

Re: How many years after graduation before you got on the course

I graduated from my conversion Masters in 2013, and have just got a place to start in 2018. So academically, I've been ready since 2013. I was unsure about the different professional/academic psychology routes, and so spent a bit of time getting some really varied experience to find out. I'm glad I ...

Any news on the Exeter list movement would be highly appreciated. Although as we don't know our places, it's more for the illusion of further information!

Re: IAPT versus AP

I would say it very much depends on the university. I interviewed at a uni last year, who told me that my interview was too IAPT-focused, and they had wanted broader experience from me. While great experience clinically, IAPT is a very narrow segment of the psychology world. The other thing IAPT sev...

Re: What to do next!

I would agree with others, that choosing universities based on their short-listing process is becoming key. Short-listing tests definitely agree with me - my application alone is the high end of good enough in all areas now, but not outstanding enough to win me interviews without something extra. So...
