Re: 5 things I'm thinking today. . .

1.) I didn't get the job. :( It was a bit frustrating, as I met all the essential and desirable criteria and I felt I did a pretty good interview, but part of me also feels...relieved? The interviewers were very nice, but it wasn't quite what I'd imagined based on the job description and I feel ther...

Re: which MSc?

I'm assuming that the research methods MSc you looked into has a large taught component and is focused on bringing people up to scratch with stats. There are other MScs that are assessed primarily through your own independent research, and the taught component is limited. I agree with Esuma that one...

Re: 5 things I'm thinking today. . .

1. One of my undergrads has got away with the most brazen bit of cheating I've seen. I knew they were working at the last minute because they contacted me not long before the deadline and asked some basic questions that made it clear they hadn't even begun the assignment. Next thing I know, they've ...

Re: 5 things I'm thinking today. . .

1.) I had my job interview today. I think it went well. I feel cautious. I have a hunch there might have been a better candidate. I hope not. I really want this. 2.) I've got plenty to keep me distracted. Manuscript deadlines, academic misconduct cases, a cat, visa applications, and my upcoming trip...

1.) It looks as if I will get my visa in time. Just about. Breathe, Lingua. Breathe. 2.) I was shaken by the news coverage of a lecturer who killed himself after being expected to mark over 400 exam scripts in under three weeks. Academic culture can be toxic. There is a common expectation that you w...

Re: Let's talk about money

If it's any comfort, there are people on this forum who have got onto training without ever having been supervised by a CP. They came out of the woodwork when I was worrying that I didn't have a CP to provide me with a reference, as all my clinical supervisors had been SaLTs or RMNs. So I think it's...

Re: Let's talk about money

I don't have much specific advice (I don't have children, which obviously puts me in a better position financially) and I'm not familiar with the employment landscape up in Scotland, but two things occurred to me when I read the OP. Firstly, try and be creative in the search terms you use for jobs. ...

Re: PhD grants

University departments quite often advertise PhD projects for which they have already secured funding, so have a look at their websites. You can also search for funded opportunities on jobs.ac.uk, if you haven't already. If you're hoping to design your own project it is a bit trickier. In that case ...

Re: Would really love some guidance, feedback and general comments

As you already have GBC, a conversion course will add nothing to your application - it doesn't override a 2:ii in your previous degree (and universities are unlikely to accept you onto a conversion anyway if you have GBC). I think you're being sensible to focus on courses with selection tests, altho...

Re: The Cathartic thread - rant here!

It was the assessment board meeting today at the uni where I am a sessional lecturer. My department head made it clear to me that I needed to attend. I was worried that the external examiner had concerns about my marking. I got up at five a.m. in order to get there on time, as repair works on the ra...

1.) Panic stations. In two weeks I'm due to go to New York for a study programme. I thought it would count as recreational study for visa purposes, as I'm not taking it for credit and I'm there for less than two months. No. I need an exchange student visa, which involves FedExing documents across th...

Re: Supporting Statement

With a supporting statement, the trick is not to repeat points from the person spec, but to provide illustrative examples of how you meet them. So you wouldn't write, "I have good interpersonal skills," but something like, "In my previous role as a Macmillan nurse, I supported many families who were...

1-4.) I am feeling very, very disillusioned right now. I am employed on a full-time contract by a research-intensive RG uni, and as a sessional lecturer at a post-92 uni, where I teach a third-year undergraduate module. This semester I have referred four students from that module to the academic mis...

Re: WARNING - SLV Intl / SLVolunteers / Sri Lanka placements

I think this is perhaps understandable. Although I agree that there isn't much the student could actually do in the "hot spots", I think this may be their eagerness to get involved, and hopefully this will develop the level of insight they have regarding these situations in the future. "live and le...
