Re: Let's talk about money

To follow up on a few things. CEng in civil engineering is the chartership route that I'm aware of, where there's several routes to qualification and a doctorate or even masters level study is not required. Heck, you can qualify as a technician without a degree. It's still a closed shop for safety's...

Re: PhD grants

Lingua Franca is right about the most straightforward way to get a funded PhD. However, you could also approach potential supervisors in advance in an area you are interested in, and then collaborate to secure funding on a proposed project. Universities often have pots of money for specific research...

Re: Let's talk about money

I'm hazy on the history of CP in Britain, but my understanding is that at one time the training was set at MSc level. I don't know why the change occurred. I would recommend the book Clincal Psychology in Britain a Historical Perspective by John Hall, which goes into the backstory and complex histo...

Re: Let's talk about money

It's certainly a funny, convoluted route to CP qualification. I do think that, perhaps, NES and whatever the other UK equivalent bodes are ought to look jointly at a more straightforward pathway (maybe along the same lines as pharmacy, which has an equivalent NHS grade structure to CP) with a speci...

Re: Mental Health Nurse working towards Counselling Psychology

There are pockets where we are less wanted/accepted or seen as a much more mixed bag (and therfore a 'rsik'- you less sure of what you getting). For example depsite being qualified and a lead in my service (and well regarded by my clinical colleagues locally) I am not eligible to be one the qualifi...

Re: Is it all made up?

I'm new to the forum and just trying to stimulate some conversation and discussion so I hope no one is offended by this, but lately in my work I've been feeling more and more that therapy is all just made up? Beyond certain natural sciences, almost everything is "made up" including (but not limited...

Re: Chances of Being Accepted

am thinking of applying for the DClinPsy at Kings College London and University College London. I am wondering if anyone may be able to tell me what my chances are of being accepted (at least for an interview) with the following qualifications and experience: Those two courses you mention are known...

Re: Counselling psychologist - is it a realistic career?

Having thought this through properly, I wonder if the 900 refers to all trainees at anytime, not 900 starting each year would make more sense. Therefore may well be 350 (ish) + independents is a more realistic number. Sorry for any confusion. I would be inclined to think of it as a cummulative tota...

Re: 2018 Doctorate Application Progress thread

There is something inherently difficult about providing meaningful feedback on the basis of forms, even if the selector had infinite time, patience and insight (which they don't). Always remember, at this stage it's often more about how well a form has been written and how it stands out from the pac...

Re: Psychology & Spain

That said - I was kind of pointing at the fact that there is often a bias in the way people think and talk about funding and resources for ClinPsych. There's often a nationalist/protectionist flavor to the discussion. I wonder where that comes from? I can completely see why people would think that ...

Re: Clinical Psychology qualification abroad

However, I would like to come back to UK and work as a Clinical Psychologist here. I am aware of the international route on BPS, but my question is - how do I find out if those specific courses would be convertible here? I don't want to waste money and time with another degree if it won't give me a...

Re: Your advice about my career - strange situation

Are there some rules that claim what a psychologist (not HCPC) can do? Without HCPC registration you would not be able to call yourself a Clinical Psychologist or Health Psychologist or any of the designated titles protected by law. It would be a criminal offence for a person use a designated title...

Re: An open letter to the rejectees of 2018

Four years on and I have some more thoughts on this. I am not involved in selection at all this year, but away from the sifting table and trainees, but ironically more in contact with actual asssistants, graduates and other aspirants. I am struck with how able, motivated and accomplished so many of ...

Re: 'considered for interview shortlisting 2018'

I made it clear in my original post that I was aware this is only the first step, I am completely aware that I haven't been offered a place already. However, for someone who doesn't have much hope or self- esteem/ confidence in themselves, it was a big deal knowing i've gotten even THIS far. This i...

Re: change career into clinical psychology from neuroscience

I came from a very similar background (neuroimaging and neuropsych post doc), and was never an assistant psych. Ten years qualified, I think it’s really helped having that research /statistical background clinically, but interestingly also when it comes to more managerial roles. So much of modern se...
