HCPC Psychologist Protected title

Post by Spatch » Wed Sep 16, 2020 3:56 pm

Just recieved this from the ACP. If anyone does have any relevant information, it can be helpful to flag up to the ACP.
The ACP-UK Board are concerned that there is a general lack of understanding about psychologist titles. People generally do not understand the difference between someone who calls themselves a ‘psychologist’ and a Clinical Psychologist (or other HCPC registered psychologist), and this may be placing the public at risk. I am sure you are familiar with examples of people working in the media who claim this title and give advice and commentary on mental health related issues, without having the necessary training to claim this expertise.

Seeking the protection of the psychologist title (as it is in many other countries) would be the ideal route to resolve this issue. However, this is likely to be a complex, costly and lengthy process requiring legislative change. Therefore, as a first step, we would like to bring the issue firmly to light with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). We believe service user experience will be an important aspect to this process and are therefore looking for people who are willing to share their stories. Do you know anyone who has seen someone calling themselves a psychologist without being HCPC registered? Have they received ‘treatment’ or advice that was unprofessional, against current evidence or harmful to them in some way? We hope that it would be empowering for anyone who has had this type of experience to share their story, but we are also mindful that it may be a distressing process. We hope that by identifying people through our members, it will be possible to support them adequately through the process and beyond.

If you know someone who may wish to share their story, please do get in touch at s.swan@acpuk.org.uk.

We will keep you informed of any developments and do feel free to get in touch with any further ideas on how we can strengthen our case to HCPC.

With warm wishes

Yes, please do contribute as this has been a long standing theme of concern on the forum.

Wise men talk because they have something to say, fools because they have to say something - Plato
The fool thinks himself to be wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool - Shakespeare
