Specialist placements in the North East

Post by Bad Kitty » Sat Feb 12, 2011 11:47 am

Hi there

I'm going to get the chance to do an elective placement in the North East (Tyneside/Newcastle/Northumberland) next year, and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for good places to work in? Areas I might be interested in are Clinical Health Psychology or Older adult (therapy and memory clinic) although I'm open to other ideas. I am on a course outside the area so there aren't any existing links to services. If anyone has had experience of a really good placement in the NE, I'd love to hear about it!

Many thanks

BK

Assuming that you are a clinical psychology trainee the etiquette between training courses is that you must go via the courses in the north east to negotiate access clinical placements if you come from out of the region. The reasons are to ensure that your arrival and any placement you might chose do not disrupt the ongoing arrangements between local courses and local supervisors. As everyone will be aware these relationships are very important and when placements are scarce (as they usually are) it can take very little to disrupt a finely balanced arrangement for placements.

So please ask your clinical tutor to discuss with the clinical tutors in Newcastle, Teeside or any other NE course which might be affected by your placement and then everything i'm sure will go very well. In addition, the local clinical tutors will have a lot of information about placements and supervisors which you, as an outsider, wouldn't necessarily have access to.

Hi w013

Thanks for the reply. I am aware of the ettiquette between courses - on my course we are strongly requested not to contact potential placements ourselves and I would hate to stand on any toes. Myself and my classmates certainly wouldn't like it if 'outsiders' tried to poach our placements!

I was really just hoping that someone may have had a good experience on placement in the area, or get an idea about what sort specialisms exist beyond what I can find online. I would definitely be making any direct enquiries through our placement co-ordinator who would contact the local course.

All the best

BK
