About the vacancy

Lifepsychol Ltd is currently seeking an Assistant Psychologist in our Milton Keynes office. The role will be predominantly to support our psychological assessments for the family court, but the role will also support clinical service delivery and, where needed, be part of various research and service evaluation projects.

The role will entail helping with summarising legal bundles, scoring questionnaires, observations of children in school and foster placements, gathering information from schools and placements with questionnaires and structured interviews, supporting training events, scoring psychometric questionnaires etc.

Depending on the demands of work we secure, there may be the possibility of co-facilitating psychoeducational or therapeutic groups to do with parenting (typically in relation to looked after and adopted children whose histories make it harder for them to form healthy attachments). If we secure research contracts and grants then you will be involved in collecting research data, undertaking interviews with participants, literature reviews, data entry/analysis, and contributing to research bids and write ups. We are likely to be evaluating the needs of children in residential care, and risk and resilience factors in adoptive matching, so the post-holder my be involved in one of these projects. If all other work is up to date and running efficiently you may be able to take on a limited amount of clinical work, should appropriate cases be referred, but this is primarily an assessment role, with possible research activities.

Although we expect applications for this post to be competitive, we do not necessarily require someone with past AP experience. However, we do want someone who is bright and personable, organised and pro-active and most of all shares our passion about applying psychology to the wellbeing of children and families. Being a small company, we have the capacity to allow posts to develop as we secure more contracts and the post-holder demonstrates their potential. I think we offer a lot in terms of personal development and this shows in our post-holders. Six of the last 8 APs I have supervised got onto training in their next application after completing a year with us (all of them got interviews, two chose a different path).

Pay will be £16-£18k per annum. The post will start with a 12-week trial period and will have regular reviews, but we expect ongoing funding to be available for at least a year.

Additional Information

The purpose of the post is to assist our work in completing psychological assessments for social services and the court system relating to attachment, parenting capacity, children's placement needs and family relationships. We also offer training and consultation, see clients for therapy related to parenting, and expect to run some therapeutic and psycho-educational groups. We have bid for some research grants, and hope to be commissioned to provide other related psychological services, so the company is constantly evolving, though the court work is our core source of income.

The team currently consists of a consultant CP who does the majority of the court work, a part-time clinical psychologist who does the majority of the therapy, a part-time operational manager and a part-time admin. We also have a summer placement for an intern, and take trainees from the Birmingham forensic/clinical course. We expect the team to grow incrementally over the next few years, but it is a business with CP at the core. There will be a minimum of one hour of supervision per week, provided by a qualified Clinical Psychologist, but there are normally lots of opportunities to interact with us during each day. We work hard because we believe in what we are doing; we enjoy spending time together working towards a common purpose of improving the lives of children and families, and we believe in helping our staff to develop. We have a very different ethos to the NHS - we have created a friendly and supportive atmosphere and we don't have cumbersome bureaucratic systems, only those that serve us in achieving our goals. We even get lunch out together (paid for by the company) from time to time! We have a well-equipped, comfortable office base, where we have free parking and our own desks and computers (with fibre-optic broadband).

Please note that this is not like an NHS job as you will not get a whole package of additional benefits like a pension, paid sick leave or maternity/paternity pay beyond the statutory amounts. There will be 20 days of paid holiday, plus 8 bank holidays (pro-rata for part-time). You can opt in to a health scheme if you wish. You will be expected to have a CRB check and to sign a non-disclosure agreement, including a commitment to preserve the confidentiality of the people we assess and details of the business.

Please note that the work often contains information relating to child abuse, neglect, domestic violence and other emotive and emotionally draining topics, and there is a chance that you may hear disclosures of sensitive information which subsequently has to be reported under child protection procedures.

Person Spec

I'm looking for a bright, personable and organised person, with a professional manner, who knows the boundaries of their own competence. You must have GBC from a completed degree or conversion course at 2:1 or better and/or a completed postgraduate qualification. We want to see that you have the ability to be proactive and autonomous, but are prepared to also get stuck in to hard work and will fit into the team. We value common sense, warmth, empathy and social skills. Good IT skills are essential, as are the highest level communication skills, both verbally and in writing, with an awareness of confidentiality. You will need well developed research skills, and the organisational and time-management skills as well as knowledge of statistics and research methodology that will enable you to take a major part in research and service evaluation projects. An impressive academic record and/or evidence of autonomous work or study would be a distinct advantage. Experience or awareness of parenting issues and/or work with children and families is important, because attachment and child development is at the heart of how we think. Apart from that you will need to travel (location is not great for public transport and you will often be expected to go out to other sites, so realistically this means a car and driver's license).
